International Morse Code Standard

International Morse Code is more than a table of dots and dashes. It is a shared character set, timing system, and operating convention designed to preserve meaning across different transmission media.

Scope of the standard

The International Telecommunication Union documents the characters and transmission principles used for International Morse Code. The system covers Latin letters, numerals, punctuation, and operational signals used in radiocommunication.

MorseCode.wiki treats this international system as its canonical mapping. American Morse is historically important but differs in characters and timing, so the two should not be mixed in a single answer without explicit labeling.

Characters and mappings

Each supported character maps to a stable sequence of short and long elements. E is one dot, T one dash, A dot-dash, and N dash-dot. Numerals use five elements, creating recognizable progressions from 1 through 0.

A deterministic mapping means the same supported input produces the same encoded sequence. Case does not alter the result. Unsupported characters should be reported or preserved transparently rather than assigned an invented signal.

The timing model

Duration distinguishes marks and boundaries. A dot is one unit and a dash three. The gap between elements of one character is one unit, between characters three, and between words seven.

These ratios remain consistent as speed changes. Increasing WPM shortens the base unit; it does not change a dash into something less than three dot units. Accurate silence is as important as accurate tone.

Punctuation and procedural signals

International Morse includes common punctuation such as period, comma, question mark, slash, apostrophe, and the at sign. Their longer patterns reduce ambiguity with letters and numbers.

Prosigns are operational combinations sent as a continuous character-like rhythm. Their purpose comes from operating convention, so presentation should distinguish a prosign from ordinary spelled text. SOS is the best-known example of a continuous special signal.

Medium independence

Morse code describes temporal events, not a particular device. The same pattern can be keyed as radio tone, lamp flashes, electrical pulses, taps, or visible marks. A printed dash represents a long event; it is not the event itself.

This medium independence explains the system’s durability. New equipment can preserve the code as long as it maintains distinguishable short and long events and the correct boundaries between them.

Speed and measurement

Words per minute provides a conventional measure of transmission speed. Training may use faster character formation with wider spacing so learners hear authentic rhythms without being overwhelmed by continuous text.

Frequency in hertz controls audible pitch and has no effect on the symbol mapping. Volume likewise does not change meaning, though suitable pitch and level improve accessibility and recognition.

Interpretation and uncertainty

Clean typed text converts deterministically. Images and recordings require recognition: a system must estimate marks, spacing, and boundaries from imperfect evidence. Confidence therefore belongs to the interpretation, not to the underlying standard.

Responsible decoders expose low confidence and allow users to inspect detected Morse before trusting translated text. Noise removal or image enhancement can improve evidence but must not silently rewrite an uncertain signal.
